Work From Home Business Blog: How Blog Commenting Got Me 1200 Backlinks in 5 Days

  • Christopher Ross · 1 year ago
Peter, I'd love to know how you quantify the number of backlinks you have. Are you using the Google link: feature or something else?
  • work at home · 2 months ago
Peter sir, really your writing is appreciable for me. Do you know that I come to know about the power of blog commenting first time from your blog. I am using your list of do follow blog for comment. I really get boosting by hearing that you get 1200 backlink within 5 days. Really great. I was frustrated before about how to build my backlink, now I daily busy on blog commenting(not spam). Sir if you have time please leave feedback on my blog. I also make my blog dofollow.
  • work at home · 2 months ago
Sir once again I informed you that I post your dofollow blog post link on v7.com forum, may be it help you get some extra visitor on your blog.
  • peterlee · 2 months ago
@ moonheart009: Hi Chandan, yes I saw that. Thanks for much for doing that and your link love. Yes I received about 16 views from V7 forum today so thanks very much. You should post more at this forum to get more traffic and some backlinks although links from forum are quite low value. Just write a very nice signature to attract people to your blog.
  • peterlee · 2 months ago
@ moonheart009: Chandan, Did you login as Disqus ID. That could be the reason why.
  • peterlee · 2 months ago
@moonheart009: Thanks Chandan for your nice words. Yes follow the simple strategy and I'm sure you will see some traffic and backlinks. I can see that you're really putting a lot of hard work. That's very good and keep up the good work.
  • work at home · 2 months ago
Sir, I have now on your blog top commentator. But my blog link is not appearing there. Why sir and how can I resolve this problem? Sir I have make my blog dofollow, so how can I put my comment form like you?
  • Curtis Chambers · 2 months ago
Great study, Peter, what sets it apart is your quantitative data.
  • Mitch · 1 year ago
First, I can't believe I'm the first one to comment on this post. Second, nice experiment, Peter. I don't know that I'd have taken the time to actually track that down, but I do know that I've finally broken into the top 200,000 ranked blogs on Technorati; I'll have to see what Website Grader says about me now. A quick question, though; how many blogs did you have to go through to find one that had both dofollow and top commenter? Also, nice find on the dofollo.com.

Hey Mitch, I just wanted to say thank you for mentioning Website Grader because I didn't know they existed. I just ran my website and I only got a 73 so I have some work to do. In three months I will check it again and let everyone know my results.
  • Medical Billing Sitemap · 7 months ago
Does Website Grader actually work? The reason I ask is because today I ran my website again and now my score is 74 but I haven't done anything to it since the last time I ran the check.
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
@Christopher Ross: Hi Chris, Thanks for dropping by. I used
WebsiteGrader.com before the start and end of experiment to find out my 'inbound links' the report gives me. Hey check it up to find out yours here.

@Mitch: Sorry Mitch you ain't the first 'cos Chris beat you to this. No trouble finding blogs with both dofollow and Top Commentators. In this experiment I had used my post The Easiest Way To Get Backlinks Starts Here in which all blog have both. The dofollow search engine I mentioned allows better searches on blogs at specific niche but may or may not have Top Commentator List.

I wonder how Chris beat me there, since there was nothing showing when I posted; sneaky!

I just ran my blog on Website Grader, which I actually wrote about back in June, and I'm now ranked 94, when I was 84 then. I've shown nice growth since then; that's not bad, eh?

Peter - was it me that you were referring to when you said "Well someone I know who does blog commenting at blogs with ‘Top Commentator’s List..." because those were the stats that I posted and I faintly remember talking to you about how they are sitewide and stuff?

Congrats though, glad to see it is paying off - wait a month and build a few more links and you will see a great increase in SERPS

@Sire: Wow 6000 links...how long did you take to get so many links. I'm just half of that. Yes I think it's a good idea to keep your report for future reference. 5 days is a good feel but a longer period like 2 months may be more conclusive to see if your comment strategy is near perfect.

@Simon from Otooo: Hey Simon, YES! YES!! you are the one who said that statement that provoked me...that excited me...that challenged me. Hey that's a pretty powerful statement. Care to make another? But I got a question for you though. When you said "...Commentator links are sitewide (because it’s in the sidebar) and it counts every single page as an inlink..." is this statement good only if the blogger installs with the setting to show the Top Commentator List on ALL pages? Most of the blogs I visit only show it on their homepage.

@Norhafidz: Hi Norhafidz, yes please try it and it will be interesting to see your results. Feel free to modify it too to get even better results. Good Luck!

Peter, wassupblog is fairly new, I think the first post was in early August of this year, so I am quite surprised at the results. Even though I have more inbound links you have almost double the pages indexed by Google.

<abbr>Sires last blog post..I’ve Just Added The Tweet My Blog Plugin</abbr>
  • Simon from Otooo · 1 year ago
    Haha, no probs
I also got a grade of 94 but I have like 19,000 inlinks now :)

The links are sitewide if the blogger chooses it to be when they install it - at the time of making that statement, most of the blogs I knew with the top commentators widget installed were sitewide with the exception of only one or two - I still believe most are sitewide.
As for another statement, I will try to think of one tonight when I'm going to sleep, as I'm heading off to bed right now

<abbr>Simon from Otooos last blog post..Technorati Authority Is Manipulated Too Easily</abbr>
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
    Hey Simon,

How long did you take to get 19,000 backlinks. I know we are getting these links very legitimately but what's your take on Google's stand on this i.e. too many links within a short time.

    Peter
  • Simon from Otooo · 1 year ago
the 19,000 backlinks has come over about 2 and a half months
My take on Google's stand on this is that it is actually working well - I have seen great improvements in the SERPS since getting these links and began getting consistent SE traffic, so in my opinion, it seems to be fine
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
    Simon,
I was trying to be subtle. What I was trying to ask you is that if you got 19,000 backlinks over 2.5 months, you are going to hit 100,000 backlinks in a year. Would Google deem it as spam although we know it's obtained legitimately and through hard work.

    Hi Peter, fantastic post.

Is there an easy way to find blogs that have top commenters list? How many comments per blog do you usually have to do to enter that list? And finally, how do those lists work, meaning are they accumulative over time or do they reset each week or month?

I'm new to this type of blogging and am pretty unfamiliar with "top commenter lists"

Thanks in advance for your help. I know you'll answer because you seem like you answer each and every blog comment. I think that's really important and we really appreciate your time and effort to help us all out, Peter. Thanks!

  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
    Hi Pat,
Welcome to my blog and community. To find blogs that have top commentators just Google it with 'finding blogs with top commentators plugin' or something close and you'll get quite a number of similar posts. However their lists may not be dofollow in which case you'll have to check yourself. There's a plugin from Firefox that helps you do this. Most Top commentators' list are set to reset after one month(it depends on owners' choice during the plugin installation). There are a few blogs I've seen showing the numbers continuously.
Hope to see you around here again.

Seeing your name on most, if not all, of the blogs I visited, I knew one fine day, you will be have more backlinks that you could have ever imagined. In fact, I can see that you already have more comments here at Peterville than you had before.

I can't stress anymore the real benefit of blog commenting. It's proven to work. Period. If anyone is still asking why no one is commenting on his/her blog, I'd make damn sure to set you as a good example.

By the way, website grader is only counting Yahoo backlinks of which the no. could be much smaller in Google. Try to count how many backlinks you have on Google from link:yourdomain.com.

  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
    Hi Yan,
Thanks for such kind words. I never knew blog commenting can be well so much of an addition, but I'm enjoying it. There's also so much I've learned just reading others' comments and that has got to be more valuable than getting a linkback don't you think. Yea you're right Google would probably show me lesser backlinks but I'll do this in another experiment I guess. But I could almost predict the result - its really hard getting a Google backlink to show up. I mean Google has a way of not showing it so I'm not even sure I have the incentive of doing that experiment.

    Peter
  • Khaled · 1 year ago
    Hi Peter
I would have thought that Google does have a filter for excessive link building and if triggered may have the reverse effect of what you are intending to achieve. Will be interesting to see if in 12 months the technique pays off.
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
Hi Khaled, if you look at the comment from Yan, he just pointed out that website grader is only counting Yahoo backlinks and the no. could be much smaller in Google. So I think there is not much to worry from Google.

Thanks for such great information. I have two questions.
    1. The strategy of becoming a top commentator. Is it realistic that blog owners of successful blogs would include me as a top commentator when I have not achieved success and I don't have the technical or marketing expertise to offer? I would not comment spam of course but it would still be apparent with my comments that I am a novice, comparitively speaking.

    2. To be on the top commentators list do you have to do more than make a lot of comments? That is do you have to register on the blog?

    Thanks again Peter,

    David
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
Hi David, first of all welcome to my blog and this community.Glad to have you here.

(1)Provided you give good comments (as opposed to "good job" "good post" types) or join in the conversation even if it's just to clarify a comment made by someone, it's still considered a valid comment which most blog owners would gladly approve of. I don't think we expect all commentators to be gurus and we encourage participation from everyone who comes to the blog at any levels of experience. (we hate spammers and their comments will be deleted).
(2)Most blogs don't require you to register. You become top commentator when you have more comments than other commentators and the no of commentators is set by the owner during the plugin installation.
That said, this blog welcomes you back anytime. Do come back and visit us. Better still subscribe to it so as not to miss out anything.

I found that the best way to check for backlinks (if you're not using SEO addon for firefox) is to go to yahoo and type into search "link:http://www.yourdomain.com"
    without quotes.
Yahoo is much better at indexing all the incoming links a site has.

    Hi Rados,
    Re: your comment on "link:http://www.yourdomain.com"

I tried this but it only brought less than half of the backlinks that I found my site to have on "
    http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/"

They are both Yahoo but I find "siteexplorer" has far better results. I can't say why for sure but I believe it could be because I am from Australia and everytime I try to type in the Yahoo.com address the site gives me the Australian Yahoo address. It doesn't give me a choice and that may limit my backlinks?

If I go straight to siteexplorer then it gives me better results because I am not on Yahoo Australian site. Do you think my logic is right or way off the mark?

Blog commenting is pretty much the only way to go if you're low on marketing cash...but a definite strategy must be decided upon or one of two things will happen:

(1)You'll lose track of all the blogs you've commented on or
    (2)You'll end up spamming

    Update.
Ok. One week on and I have 148 links. Not thousands but I could have been more aggressive but I have actually only posted on sites I like and have really enjoyed it. It was a good kick for me to get more involved in the blogging community and I have found some great sites that I will stick with.
I didn't just comment on blogs with the top commentator plugin but strangely I have found that I am still getting multiple links from some sites that don't have it.
All in all a worthwhile task and I will definitely continue to comment more.
It also brings a lot more visitors to the site.
Great to help boost the rankings of a new blog and I will now keep with it and also go back to article writing so I can easily rank high for my keywords in google. On other sites I have easily got page 1 or 2 with a long tail based article which brings good traffic. A good experiment for a totally new site with no other work done.

    Peter,

This is very interesting stuff. I need to get more inbound links to my site/blog. Is it necessary that I install the Top Commentators plug-in for my blog?
  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
@Steve Gitto: Steve, It not necessary but let's just say that would help you get better results. For example I only comment only blogs which have both top commentators and do follow. So if you do not have the top commentator on your blog, bloggers like me will not comment on your blog. There will still be a minority who do so but results may not be as good as you had hoped for.Get the picture.

I've been doing this for the last couple of months and I can say that it DEFINITELY works. There is no question. Top Commentator blogs (like this one) are backlink gold mines. They are wonderful stuff. Each month I've been focusing on a different 5-6 blogs aiming to be somewhere in the list. It hasn't brought me much traffic, but it has definitely upped my number of backlinks.

  • Peter Lee · 1 year ago
Nina, thanks for dropping by and welcome to this blog and community.
PR stands for page rank which is a number (1-10) given by Google representing how important that page is on the web.
Nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index. To put it simply, you won't get any backlinks if you comment on a blog which has no follow attribute.

It should be noted that the effectiveness of this strategy depends on your willingness to keep at it, to remain "forever" a loyal blog reader and commentator. If you leave it for a week, all those "top commentator" links disappear. Of course, if you have held a top commentator spot for a while on a blog, that means that you already have lots of comment links on lots of pages of the blog. And it is also easy to regain your top commentator spot as soon as you plunge back in. But it is important to understand that this "top commentator" is a journey, not a destination.

What do you mean by "top commentator"? Google reads the links on the entire page without regard to the top listing. That's what I've learned anyway.

    Please advise.

  • Peter Lee · 10 months ago
@Bee Pollen Secrets: You are half right. Google reads the link on your comment and if it's dofollow, you get a backlink. But if you are one of the top commentators on that blog, you will get more backlinks-on many pages on the blog.

I've been meaning to compile a list of blogs using the Top Commentator plugin and it suddenly occurred to me that we could use Twitter to do it. I hope you don't mind my suggesting the idea here.

Send a Tweet using #TopCommentator and including your blog URL and what it is about. I'll compile the Tweets and post links to all the blogs that submit their information. (Anyone else is welcome to do so too if they wish).

I just wish my technical advisor weren't out of pocket. We've been talking about getting Thesis on my blog and adding the Top Commentator plugin and haven't been able to do so yet.

Even without it I can certainly put a good Top Commentator Blog List to good use as can many others. What do you think? I'll be checking for your Tweets. I'm @GrowMap.

Hi Peter. I meant send a Tweet that has #TopCommentator in it and I'll compile all the Tweets that include that. Or you could just @GrowMap with the same information.

In looking for this comment to reply I found out you had already compiled a list of blogs using the Top Commentator plugin. You can use Twitter Search to check for any replies to update your own list if you wish.

I'm pretty sure I am following you. I'll make sure. While I'm here I have some other questions for you:

    1) Are you using something that adds links to the comments you leave in other blogs in the trackbacks/pings section below the comments? If yes, what is it?

    2) How did you send me an email and leave an identical comment here too? Do you have that automated also?

Thanks for all you do. I've got to spend more time in your blog!

Wow, getting that many backlinks in a few days is impressive.

Anyone can post 3 quality comments on dofollow blogs each day. If you do that consistently, you can have 90 backlinks in a month. In many cases that would more backlinks than your competitors have.

I am huge believer in the dofollow blog movement, and any new blogs I create are dofollow. It does take a few minutes to monitor new comments each day, but the reward is worth it. My dofollow blogs are receive more traffic than my nofollow blogs.

    Hi Peter,
I'm really very intrigued by the this whole idea and I want to implement it for a number of sites I'm building. The question I wanted to ask you is--Is it critical for the blogs you comment on to be in the same niche?
The reason I'm asking is, I'm mostly targeting electronic products and when I do a specific product search in the google dofollow blog search I get very few blogs that I can actually comment on and finding top commentators on those seems to be a tall order...
I also have number of electronic product sites I want to boost this way with link juice so I'd appreciate any tips you might be able to give me? Thanks so much in advance!

Wow. I am trying to increase my blog traffic, and I have been reading several webpages on how to do this effectively. However, I have to say. . .I am so in the dark on this! I don't understand pingbacks, trackbacks, backlinks, inlinks. . . I know what they *are* I just don't know how to use them. I am SO glad I found your blog! I'm going to go read everything I can on this. I followed a link from a comment on my blog to another site, to here, the linking stuff amazes me. How you can get so far away from your home base and not really even realize *HOW* you did so. ha!

Thank you for quality content that is truly helpful! ~S

First, thanks to Mr. Peter to give me some a light about this "backlink" word, now i can see more clearly what i must to do to make a properly backlink.

Second, thanks too with your generous to provide a website services like website grader to analyse my site.

Third, i just want to ask about what i ever heard before, is it true that google give a penalty to the site with do follow method ?

    @Peter Lee: I have 2 questions.

    1) Does it hurt (in terms of ranking) to have so many backlinks created in less time ? I have heard Google penalizes when alot of backlinks are created in less time.

    2) Because of top commentating backlink is created on all pages of blog. This means many backlinks with same anchor text. Does it hurt ? Again, I have heard alot about it.

Can you please clear my doubts. Thanks
  • peter · 9 months ago
    Another question:

How is top commentator implemented on your blog. Does it take in account for email address, website url or name or combinations of all ? Actually I wanted to change my anchor text. As I believe my name will hurt me.

    Please help.

  • peterlee · 8 months ago
@ Work From Home Resources: Blog commenting does take you some time especially since you will need to read the whole post and what others are saying in their comments too to be able to provide quality comments. But I think it's worth this effort in the long run.
  • Catherina · 8 months ago
I find commenting on blogs so much easier than writing articles and submitting to article directories. I'm trying to build backlinks this way - it's more fun and you get to explore what others are blogging about.
  • marcus@make money online · 1 month ago
I totally agree. Blog commenting is a lot more easier then writing articles. You don't have to come up with ideas to write your articles about. You just need to have an opinion about the blog post that you read.
  • kg - petyourdog.com · 8 months ago
top commentator can surely get you a lot of backlinks.. the value of most of them will be almost nothing.. because they are numerous coming from the same domain... but it is still a great thing to have extra backlinks
  • Make Money Online · 8 months ago
Peter, I think the WebsiteGrader tool just able to figure out an estimation result. As I checked on my rank, my index pages were only 14..=.=" That's not that accurate for current pagerank too...
But other result like Alexa rank..technoratti..backlinks should be no problem..
Anyway, you have a very good achievement on your blog, keep it up Peter! :)

Peter, I'm curious why my backlinks will be dropped by using the same tool as yours? I do leave comments for few days, but the number of backlinks did not increase but decrease. Do you have any idea about this?

    Regards,
    Lee
  • peterlee · 7 months ago
@ Make Money Online: Hi Lee, I have encountered this too.I suspect some of the links are not good enough. It's better to focus on similar niche and higher PR blogs to avoid this problem.
  • Search Engine Submission · 7 months ago

  • david · 7 months ago
I just found this out about a month ago when analyzing my Google Webmaster Tools. I thought it was a mistake but sure enough they are all inbound links. I wonder if Google is planning on squelching this practice or if the fact that the link is watered down by the sheer number of outbound links on a site already does. Anyway, good post.
  • peterlee · 7 months ago
@ david: I don't think you will have any problems with Google. But in reality backlink strength from commenting is not as high as backlink from within the content pages. But you still get some link juice. So when commenting it helps if the blog or site is highly ranked.

But does your website didn't went to the Big G's sandbox? Having such number of backlinks in such period of time is so risky getting sandboxed. It's more like cheating on Mafia Wars
  • peterlee · 2 months ago
@ prosourcecorp: No my website didn't go to the sandbox because this is just a one week's test and I don't do too much blog commenting nowadays . I did it to prove that blog commenting does get loads of backlinks if you follow a strategy. Having said this, I now focus on quality backlinks like PR6-PR9 using Angela's Backlink Building Program which has worked very well for me. I still do blog commenting but it's more for building my network of friends and staying in touch with them
